11:35 pm - A translation of the Czech ADB article from October the 6th (I should have done it weeks ago)
First, I am really sorry for mistakes - but it´s difficult to translate Czech play with words and make it English play with words when I am not sure which word to use :-) So I hope that you at least understand the sense of it ;-) Especially those articles of yours are fun :-)

David Hewlett was born on 18th April 1968 in England, but his family has moved to Canada very soon.
David considers himself as a "computer nerd" (there is no Czech word for "nerd") - with everything that covers it.
Part of is a weakness for sci-fi (his most favorite was a british TV show Doctor Who)and an extraordinary attraction to everything that contains a processor or batteries. He flirted with an amateur movie already in a High school, which he has left so he could work as a "professional" actor.
He was in few horrors, while he worked with one of his (five) sisters in different computer projects. She made a graphics, he was a programmer.
He got a bigger acting opportunity in TV shows Kung-Fu: Legend Continues, Traders (never aired in the Czech Republic) and thriller Cube.
He is loved in the whole world as an egocentric, genius scientist Rodney McKay in Stargate: Atlantis. And in the break, he decided to make his own movie just for fun.
He cast his own dog Mars, sister Kate, and his good friend from Atlantis, Paul McGillion ("He had nothing else to do"), he also asked Christopher Judge from SG1 to join the cast ("this so isn´t his type of role, that I thought it could be fun")and you have a very good comedy A Dog´s Breakfast.
David is married for the second time and father for the first time. "It´s like to rip off the heart from my chest and watch it toddle around." He is ecstatic from his little son.

The little sign at the photo is: "I love my job"
And the big letters mean: "Geek in action"...I really don´t know how to translate it cos "mimoň" is a typical Czech word, a diminutive of "mimozemšťan" (alien), which in this case means also that he is "mimo" like "he doesn´t live in the reality" or something like that. So, simply told, I think "Geek" fits the best :-)

3:37 pm - Chuck
I have to admit that NBC´s Chuck was at first only an option when I had nothing to watch a year ago. Then I started to like it – after five episodes, I totally fell in love with this show and now, I think it´s one of the best in TV this year. Chuck is in his Season Two now and it´s getting better and better with every episode. Season One had only 13 episodes because of the writer´s strike (trust me, hold on until episodes 6 and 7) and Season Two will have 22 episodes.

And what is it about? Chuck Bartowski is an ordinary guy who has been followed by a bad luck. He was kicked out of Stanford, because his roommate framed him and seduced Chuck´s girlfriend. Chuck didn´t have a chance to finish school and is stuck in a Buy More store, with different creatures of a geek life. He himself is kind of geek, working in a Buy More section, Nerd Herd, where computers are repaired. His life is leading nowhere but he seems to accept it, even when his sister, Ellie, a succesful sister, tries to push him to do *something* with his life. He plays videogames with his best geeky friend, Morgan and World of Warcraft is a center of his life.
Everything changes when Chuck´s former Stanford roommate, Bryce Larkin, sends him an email, which contains all government secrets. When Chuck opens this mail, all those secrets are downloaded into his brain. The government supercomputer is called Intersect and Bryce Larkin is a rogue spy, who destroyed it and files sent to Chuck. And this nerd-herd ordinary guy suddenly becomes very important, actually, the most important intelligence asset in the world and has to be protected. CIA sends a beautiful, smart and dangerous Sarah Walker and NSA a silent, strong and dangerous major John Casey.
Those three create an unlikely team, where they are saving the world in a daily basis, with information from the Intersect that Chuck can use with help of „flashes“ – when he meets a bad guy, all information are flashed before his eyes.

Simple premise, you say. It isn´t original. We saw this before. Probably, yes. But Chuck is more than just a comedy/drama/spy show. There are also interesting characters with some character development, and every character exists in some kind of his own world. Chuck, Sarah and Casey in a spy world, where Chuck has to deal with the fact that he has to do a spy work without any training and agaist his will gets more and more involved – and also gets better and better in this job. He has to protect his friends and family, so Sarah, as his protection, has to pretend that she is his girlfriend. Eventually, of course, they both are more involved in a romantic way, which isn´t allowed. Chuck´s sister Ellie and her boyfriend, „captain Awesome“, don´t know about Chuck´s second life either and Chuck is often put into a tricky situation when he has to think out excuses why he missed a family party.
And also, what are you gonna do, when you know, that a dangerous bomb is about to explode and destroy the life in a half of the state and you can´t say to your family? Ellie is getting further from her brother and it´s only matter of time when their relationship crashes.
Then Chuck´s best friend, Morgan, who is as geeky as possible. He has no social life, no other friends, no family and so he kinds of adopts Chuck´s life as his own. This is the only part that can be annoying in some places – especially in the end of Season One, when Morgan´s selfish behaviour almost caused a disaster in Chuck´s life. Fortunately, in Season Two, Morgan seems to be a little bit more „normal“ and is pushed back by other Buy More life – Jeff, Lester and „Big“ Mike, a manager of Buy More.

There are two or three separate lines in every episode – Chuck´s latest mission, Buy More line, involving usually some crazy, for us unimportant but for Buy More employees life depending problem and sometimes, we can also see Ellie Bartowski´s perfect life with her boyfriend. All those lines are separated but also connected in many ways. How is a character of Chuck changing, his friends and family are changing with him. Morgan and also Ellie feel that they are „losing“ him somehow, and have to try to live without him. In latest episodes, there are very few scenes with Chuck in a Buy More – we can almost feel how he doesn´t belong there any more. He is more adult, mature and he still hates a spy life, but can´t help it because the Intersect in his brain is stuck and makes impossible for him to continue to live a normal life. He also fell for Sarah and she for him – but neither of them wants to admit it.

What a spy show would it be without a story development and secrets. There are some suprising twists during Season One, showing us, that nothing in Chuck´ s life is a coincidence and in Season Two (right now on TV), we are getting deeper and deeper into a spy life – and we are doing it with Chuck´s help, from his point of view.

I am curious how far can this show get without becoming too serious and darker. There are many changes, and they are made very well, still keeping its „spymedy“ premise. But sometimes, you can feel an indeterminateness of Chuck´s life and his not-so-certain future.
His life is in a constant danger – from people, who want the Intersect and also from people who are protecting him but are more interested in the Intersect than Chuck as a person. Also his hidden feelings toward Sarah will probably lead nowhere – unless those talented and great writers won´t come up with something really cool in the end. But we all hope that the end is very far, far away.

5:38 pm - A Dog´s Breakfast in the Czech Republic (with photo)
I can´t believe it but ADB will be in the Czech Republic - in a cable TV. A cable channel, Cinemax, will air ADB next Tuesday at 20.00. There is also an article with an awesome picture of David in one of Czech TV magazines. You can look at that here: http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/9569/dhkj3.jpg

I can translate it if anyone wants it ;-)

8:47 pm - Conventions - Part Two
So, for better image, how Czech conventions look like, you can follow those links to youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62O6wgVzlSE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dARaAYuzjNs
They are two music videos, made by Tar-ara Istandil. It´s from Festival fantazie 2007 and Festival fantazie speciál 2007. They are great, the music fits and I think you can make a picture from them :-) Songs are in English so I think you will be OK :-)
Tar-ara welcomes any feedback ;-)

And this is from Saturday evening from convention called Scon (S like "3S" - Star Trek, Stargate and Star Wars). Organizers had prepared a great evening, it was mostly parodic and incredibly funny.

2:38 pm - Conventions - which are better?
Hey, I think it´s time for some update again. I decided that I should keep posting about anything but I am not sure how long will this determination last :-)
Anyway, as some of you probably know, I was at the biggest convention in Central Europe last week - ten days in "Festival fantazie" (Festival of Fantasy). Lots of movies, TV shows, literature, writers (Sapkowski e.g), meeting people, presentations (I had seven of them) and I came home really exhausted. It should be "a fantastic vacation" but truth is that Czech conventions don´t work like that. I am very well known in some levels of the Czech fandom (Stargate, Star Trek, british shows...) and it ´s not easy to enjoy something like that because people just want to talk and say "hey".
I wish some foreign fans, who have conventions connected with actors, could sometimes visit a typical Czech convention. I have met few foreign fans this year, they usually visited movies and waited for Sapkowski to come. But Czech conventions have so different atmosphere, that I can´t describe it. Those two kinds of conventions can´t be compared. Anywhere in convention abroad is it about actors and about a fantastic atmosphere. They all have the same pattern (queue - meeting with an actor - queue - photo with an actor - queue - evening with con dancing). Don´t get me wrong, I love it, it´s different. But Czech conventions are more diverse. You can find there anything  - movies, TV shows, presentations about everything (TV shows, literature, history), games, writers meeting with fans, everything in one package and in a cheap package. Well, I would lie if I said that we don´t like actors there. David Nykl had a big succes last year and for example, CzechTrek, which is set on September, has really close to commercial conventions (last year came Marina Sirtis, this year will come Denise Crosby) and Czech trekkies are able to invite one actor per year (they love to come here). But it´s all from fans for fans, so no five, six actors - we can´t afford it.
I am going to Pegasus Four to London on January (if my bank will be able to fix problems with my card and I will manage to get tickets) and I can´t wait. But the diversity of Czech convention is so big that it´s incomparable. I can try to compare. I had presentions in Gatecon again, about commercial conventions (well, not all are commercial, I know, some of them are just "abroad") but I am sorry to hear that nobody abroad knows about Czech conventions. Well, the main problem is that they are in Czech :-) But most of fans speak English and I think that for someone who lives in the Czech Republic and wants to know Czech fandom, is definitely worth to go to some convention. But he needs to accept the fact that he will sleep in a sleeping bag and eat only fast food :-)

And again, I am sorry for my English, my grammar sucks lately :-)

12:40 am - My new obsession - Life on Mars :-)
I fell for Life on Mars recently (and I love John Simm :-)) and this is my humble opinion or even review. I am sorry for mistakes ;-)

DCI Sam Tyler is a modern detective of Manchester Police in 2006, who tries to find a serial killer. When his girlfriend and colleague is taken by this killer, he is desperate to find him. But he never gets a chance. After a car accident, he suddenly wakes up in 1973, which isn´t too friendly time for his police style. He doesn´t know if he is in coma, mad or if he is really back in time. He can hear sounds and voices from the future, which makes him think that he is in a coma and can´t just wake up. But he has to do his job because it´s the only thing keeps him sane – more or less. He lost a rank somewhere on his way throught the time so he has to deal with his new boss, DCI Gene Hunt and his rough methods of policing. And, somewhere in this madness, he has to find his way back to 2006. But in the end, will he want to go back?

Life on Mars was a suprising hit of BBC in 2006/2007. With its simple, but still original plot, mixing „Sweeney“ and „Back to the future“, caught attention of millions of viewers. Viewers, weary of all the „CSI“ criminal shows and different spin-offs, were happy to see some good, old, „Professional“-like show, where criminals get what they deserve and crimes are solved by detective minds and not by computers and DNA scans.

The title has nothing to do with Mars but it´s called after song by David Bowie – Life on Mars. And, also because Sam feels like on a different planet when he gets to 1973. You can hear songs from 70s, from David Bowie to Rolling Stones in the whole show. It fits perfectly to the story and it´s so intensive that you may have trouble to get „Life on Mars“ from your head.

The main success is based on the collision of two worlds – Sam Tyler´s world, where is everything driven by rules and law, and Gene Hunt´s world, where rough methods and common sense play main role.

And, it works. It works great because both, Gene and Sam, are affecting each other and learn from each other. Sam, used to solving everything by science, who already forgot how to use instincts and „gut feeling“, is sceptical of using fists instead of brain. And Gene, who is used to beat the answer out of his suspect, is sceptical of scientific methods and „forensics“ is almost a swear word for him and, in his opinion, good for nothing. But, they both are, oddly enough, open to new methods and as the episodes go on, we can even be witnesses of how their roles are switching sometimes and especially Sam will take up understanding his buried detective instincts.

Sam is glad that he can finally be a real cop and feel the pleasure to actually hit some criminals who are guilty and take up arms against those bad guys. And Gene, who is still a good and smart cop, finds out, that blood patterns are not only nice pictures and that to be kind to a witness might actually help.

This everything is highlighted by their colleagues, who have different reactions to both men, but especially Annie, a young police woman, isn´t sure how to feel. She is the only one who knows the truth about Sam but doesn´t believe him – she thinks he is just shaken by the accident he had. Sam and Annie like each other but they are both unsure about their feelings. Especially Sam, who believes that everything is just in his head, never takes Annie out.

Sam keeps fighting with everyone and everything, he refuses to give up but eventually finds a balance and fits in. He fits in so much that he starts to doubt if he really wants to go back to the future – or if his future is real at all.

In Life on Mars is also used a very nice language. Set in Manchaster, different accents and word connections make it special. It´s hard for non-native English speaker to understand everything. With pop-cultural allusions, it might be hard for non-UK resident to catch everything. But it´s OK, there are plenty of other things that any viewer can enjoy.

Life on Mars has something, that is typical for most of current British TV shows. Mixture of comedy and drama, politically incorrect while it doesn´t look like politically incorrect at all.. It´s not taken too seriously in some points, but seriously enough to make us worried about characters, especially about Sam.

Actors in this show are very good, I can even say they are great. John Simm in the role of Sam Tyler is incredible and capable to handle all aspects of his role.

Philip Glenister as Gene Hunt is great in his role of a drunk, hard, stubborn cop.

Life on Mars also deals with problems of 70s – racism, sexism, new drugs, but everything is written naturally, in some kind of „by the way“ style and isn´t it forced as in many US shows that could try to do the same. Life on Mars has two seasons, with eight episodes in each and the final episode explains everything, with some suprising twists and a shocking end.

Let´s see how US remake, made by ABC television, will handle this challenge. I don´t think it´s gonna work. What about you?

3:20 pm - Save Nathan Petrelli, save Heroes
I am updating this blog after very long time and I have to say it´s because of, for me, very unpleasent event. It seems that authors of Heroes are split if they should bring Nathan Petrelli back to Heroes in Volume 3. I can use tone of swear words and asking if they didn´t lose their mind or I can do something.
I have to admit, I have never faced some possibility of the simple fact that my favorite character (and one of most developed and best written) might be written off the show. I understand now how the fans of Carson Beckett or Elizabeth Weir were feeling feel.
But I can do something. I joined community www.savenathanpetrelli.com and I started the campaign where even you can help. You can join, too. I went so far that I wrote and sent a letter to the creator of Heroes, Tim Kring, which I have never done before. But you can do simple things. Promote your opinions or vote in different blogs and forums about bringing Nathan back. One of the places where you can say what you think is Greg Beeman´s blog. You can write your comment and request about not killing Nathan. There are over 200 posts now and most of them are the pleas about not killing Nathan off.
Or in nbc forum here.
I could write you at least five reasons why Nathan should stay there, from the fact that he is one of the most interesting characters, obviously the only one thinking straight this year, and his bond and dynamic with Peter can´t be replaced. And Peter is apparently lost without him. Adrian Pasdar is also one of the best actors in Heroes and has fanstic chemistry with everyone. That goes to the character of Nathan, too, who is the only one who can really unite the heroes and the only one who can talk to people, organize them.

I ask you for your help. You can sign a petition for saving Nathan. If you really want to do at least something, then this is the best way for you.
But in my opinion, the best way is to write a letter to Tim Kring. Paper letter is not easy to miss, it is permament and he can´t remove it by sending it to spam like in mailbox. And it´s more personal, especially the hand-written letters.
And, it´s the best to send two letters to both of those addresses:

Tim Kring
“Heroes”
c/o Tailwind Productions
100 Universal City Plaza
Bldg. 5225
Universal City, CA 91608
USA

Tim Kring
c/o Rick Rosen (Kring’s Talent Agent)
9601 Wilshire Blvd.
3rd Floor
Beverly Hills, CA 90210
USA

But if you can´t decide, send it to the first one, then you will be sure he gets it.  I think this is what us, international fans, can do.

And if you are from US and  heading to Jules Verne Festival, where will be entire Heroes cast, including Tim Kring, you might give support to Adrian Pasdar/Nathan Petrelli, too.

I appreciate your help and thank you very much!

10:13 pm - Back from FF
So Fantasy Festival is over. It was great and David Nykl was fantastic as always. I have only few photos, in very low quality. I will have better later. I will post video-interview later, which I made for our website and I will try to make transcript of Q&A. Now, three photos.
First from Friday
Next from Saturday
This one is from Saturday, too.

So it´s already confirmed. David Nykl will come to the Fantasy Festival. First Q&A will be on Friday at 20:00. Then on Saturday at 17:00. After the Saturday Q&A should follow photo session and autographs.
Unfortunately so far it looks that there is no chance for foreigners to understand because David will speak in Czech. I tried to convince Gatecon team but it didn´t work. The only thing that might help to at least assistance of  interpreter could be mails. Contacts and application in English can be found in English version of site of the FF.

Hi everyone. Sorry for not updating, but I am running own site about DH and helping in one SGA site. So this is just quick "hi" for you bc it´s Xmas.
And I apologize for not updating my DH site in last two weeks. We are moving our server, so all updates would be lost anyway.

So, that´s all, now-MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Když Vánoce milujete, není co řešit. ;-)

1:17 pm - Avalcon, Sickness and Zelenka
Complicated :-) I have a flu, and I am feeling very bad. But, the good thing is that I can work on my presentation. You don´t know that? :-) I have presentation in Avalcon about Rodney McKay/David Hewlett. Czech cons are not like other cons. We don´t have big TV or movie stars (sometimes, sure) but usually very good fantasy authors like guests. So we have to help to ourselves. I have 50 minutes for speaking about Rodney and about David. Which means...I am still trying to find some bigger photo of David with Jane (not the commercial from BOBW con). So if someone can help me..? Oh, and if you have some Traders episode, I would be very grateful :-)You have...one week to let me know :-)
And what about Zelenka? Well, I think we don´t have to be worried that they will kill him this year. DN shouldn´t have been in last episode of S3 because of making some movie. But something changed so some Zelenka scenes were written to last episode. Good news. And because it wasn´t planned, I doubt they would kill him, don´t you think?

10:29 pm - Request
I have a little unusual request. I have my own Czech website and I have big problem. The site is only 2 months old...but I have been collecting material for almost 2 years now. So many wallpapers or icons are from people who don´t know it. I have no idea where I took them. As you can see there, I am trying to credit if I know it. There are lots of "unmarked" icons. So if you are making icons, go there, look and let me know. I will remove them or credit. I never wanted to profane someone´s work but it´s hard to find owners of the icons and wallpapers two years back.
My site is here
And one my personal excuse to brandisbabe whose icons I used and I  didn´t ask. It´s poor excuse but I honestly thought that I asked. I wrote to some people who didn´t care and didn´t want to credit so I thought brandisbabe was one of them. I wrote in one week with 20 people and it´s then hard to remember who is who. So I am sorry again.

5:49 am - Message from David Nykl
David Nykl sent a message to Czech fan club. I am not going to translate it whole...there are the usual things. But it looks like he can´t come this year to Czech Republic :-( He said that he will be in Deggendorf 4.-6. November. Deggendorf isn´t far from Czech borders...
And the most important thing. He said that he got a script from the newest episode..."Tao of McKay"...yay, another McKay episode. I wonder if it writes Martin Gero again. I think he does and I think it´s the fourth part of McKay Quadralogy he spoke about. So...can somebody say something from the name of the episode? Because I can´t. But another episode with McKay, it´s great. There is never enough Rodney :-)

What do you think? Will we see sooner photos from McKay and Mrs.Miller or promos of characters? I can´t decide which would be better. But I think the episode would be a bit better.
I am anxious to see Kate Hewlett with her brother and to the "hewlettism" :-)

10:36 pm - Fantasy Festival
There is Fantasy Festival in 30.6-9.7 2006 in Czech Republic. It is the biggest in CR and of course, without actors from SG because of the making of new episodes (in Avalcon, maybe?) but you can come anyway. There will be some guests from world of literature-Andrej Běljanin, Philippe Coriat or Markus Heitz.
The English version is here: http://www.festivalfantazie.cz/en/index.php3?pg
So you can come if you want :-)
